Wood, 18x28x20
2015
This walnut trunk resisted me, technically and conceptually. That’s where the name comes from.
The walnut’s heartwood is dark and hard; the sapwood brown, easily splintering along the growth lines. I textured part of the trunk to trap the light while slowing the impact of the clean shape jutting up against it. The sculpture’s twist and out-reach are interesting from all sides. I was proud to balance this large piece on a 1/16 inch edge!
